Tasty Japanese dishes

Tempura

If you enjoy crispy fried foods, then you will love tempura. Tempura are pieces or slices of meat, fish, and/or vegetables that have been covered in a special tempura batter and deep fried until they become crunchy and pale gold in colour.

Okonomiyaki

Okonomiyaki is definitely a staple of Japanese cuisine and travellers really love trying it. If you've never had it, Japanese people tend to have a hard time explaining what it is; they call it a "Japanese pizza".

Kare-Raisu (Curry Rice)

Also a very popular, simple and delicious dish that we can find in Japan, Kare-Raisu is just rice with curry but the taste is certainly different from any other curry dishes.

The most popular types of sushi

Uramaki

Uramaki is considered western-style sushi. It's basically maki that's inside out. The rice is on the outside and the seaweed is on the inside.

Maki

This is cut-rolled sushi, which is traditionally made using a sheet of nori (seaweed) that’s wrapped with a layer of veggie, rice, and fish.

Sashimi

Sashimi is distinct from sushi, as it is just the raw fish component, without the rice. Sliced very thinly and served uncooked, popular sashimi are salmon, tuna, octopus, scallop, and sea urchin.

The most essential sushi making tips

img
Keep a bowl of water
Always keep a bowl of water and a kitchen towel close to you when making sushi.
img
Use a sushi-rolling mat
While your hands are capable of making haphazard rolls, having a sushi-rolling mat is what makes them look so pretty and professional.

Don’t overwork the rice
Don’t overwork the rice, either when seasoning or when creating the bed for nigiri sushi or maki. Your sushi rice needs air to make good sushi.
